Well, considering that most people have less influence over legislation tha=
n
the companies or groups that would take advantage of autoplay in windows,
shouldn't people be told that when they install anti-virus and anti-spyware
programs on their computers that they also turn off autoplay. I remember
seeing instructions for turning off autoplay that did not involve directly
editing the registry.

i may be wrong but if one were to look at a product as a package of uses
geared towards a market, here the MS market includes (a) people who are
concerned enough to put in the effort to protect themselves and are likely
to be in the minority, (b) those who are unaware of the risks or unwilling
to learn to defend themselves because they want someone else to do the work
and they therefore wait for MS updates which do not always cover existing
and known the risks and (c) those willing to take advantage of those in (b)=
.
some people appreciate the convenience of autoplay and are unaware of the
risks, such as the people in (b). People in (b) should be educated about
the risks and given the opportunity to fall into group (a) or at least
behave more likely people in (a). Requiring legislation, even narrowly
tailored legislation, may be comprable to a law to the effect that people
should always lock their doors in certain neighborhoods because they will b=

robbed if they don't. there are those who leave their doors unlocked becaus=
e
they feel safe and can't be bothered to take 15 seconds to reach for keys
and unlock door each time they come home. from a security point of view,
those people in (b) need protection but from a usage point of view, may be
that is what they want.
