Patriot Act

Hey everyone,

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050405/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/patriot_act_10

This is an article about the potential renewal of parts of the
Patriot Act. Opponents concerns are that the Act allows the
government to get records about people who are not suspected
terrorists or spies and that it allows the government to target
certain groups.

The Justice Department's response was that "no civil rights abuses
have been proven." Does this mean that we should let the government
do what it wants with no legal safeguards to protect individuals as
long as no one can prove that it is abusing its power? That seems a
little ridiculous to me, especially when many of the information is
obtained through secret searches for information about individuals
who have no idea that they are being targeted.
