While I agree with Camden that many companies routinely ask for SSN, it
doesn't mean you should give it to them. Unfortunately, many companies
still treat the SSN as a reliable "secret" identifier, so it can be used
for identity theft.

Even the social security administration suggests you keep it
"confidential" to avoid identity theft.
