Nextel Contempt Charges Dropped Over 'Glitch'
The Washington Post Monday, May 13, 2002; 7:22 AM
Nextel Communications Inc. is back in good graces with the Baltimore vice squad.
The state's attorney in Baltimore dropped its contempt-of-court action against Nextel after acknowledging that the company wasn't in contempt of a court order allowing drug investigators to listen in on the phone conversations of a Nextel customer. The state's attorney had charged that Nextel twice interrupted service on a cellular phone that was being tapped by narcotics detectives, halting a key investigation. A Nextel spokeswoman said the petition related to a "glitch" in a court-ordered surveillance performed by Nextel. Because of the nature of the surveillance, the spokeswoman didn't elaborate on the glitch but did say the state recognized that it was unintentional.
